Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine

An internationally recognised qualification in Occupational Medicine

Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MFOM) is an internationally recognised benchmark of excellence, valued by healthcare employers worldwide.

MFOM is achieved through examination and is accredited by the Medical Council of Ireland as a leading knowledge-based assessment for Occupational Medicine in Ireland.

MFOM is an essential component of Higher Specialist Training in Occupational Medicine, which is the final stage of training before independent practice.

The MFOM qualification is recognised by the General Medical Council in the UK. This means that international medical graduates can apply for full registration with a licence to practice in the UK if they hold Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

New for 2021

Please note that the order of the Portfolio and Written components has been reversed, starting in 2021. Candidates must now pass the MFOM Written exam before they are eligible to sit the MFOM Portfolio.

Also note that the MFOM Written exam is being held online, via remote invigilation. Click here for more information about remote invigilation.

MFOM at a glance

The Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM) examination tests advanced knowledge and skills in Occupational Medicine.

The exam consists of five components:

  1. MFOM Written
  2. MFOM Portfolio - As well as your submission, candidates may be called forward to defend, by a viva voce examination (VIVA), any of your 10 submitted cases
  3. MFOM OSPE (Objective Structured Practical Examination)
  4. Report Writing (Same day as OSPE)
  5. Critical Appraisal (Same day as OSPE)

Each Part is taken separately and must be passed before you can progress to the next stage.

You have three years from the date of passing the written exam to pass the portfolio and the OSPE.

We recommend that you have at least two years' experience in Occupational Medicine before you apply for the exam.
