About MFOM OSPE

At this exam you will complete eight OSPEs (Objective Structured Practical Examinations).

You will also sit a report writing exam and a critical appraisal exam.

New for 2022:

For the 2022 exam, the report writing exam and a critical appraisal exam will be held the day before the OSPE, at RCPI  in central Dublin.

What to expect at the exam stations

You will be examined at eight OSPE (Objective Structured Practical Examination) stations. You have ten minutes to examine each station.

Most of the stations will involve taking directed specific histories from simulated patients or performing physical examinations of particular systems. You may also encounter stations assessing practical skills such as the interpretation of audiometric or spirometric tracings.

You will be asked questions at the end of the station. You must pass at least six of the eight stations.

You need to bring the following items with you to the exam:

  • Stethoscope
  • Measuring tape
  • Tendon hammer
  • Clinical torch
  • Ophthalmoscope
  • Auriscope

Report Writing exam

This is a 30 minute written examination and takes place on the day before the OSPE. 

Critical Appraisal exam

This is a 90 minute written examination and takes place on the day before the OSPE. 

Entry requirements

  • You must have passed the MFOM Portfolio and the MFOM Written exam within the last three years
  • If this three-year period has expired, you must re-submit the portfolio and re-sit the written exam

Application fee

The fee to sit this exam in Ireland is €780. The method of payment is credit or debit card, taken at the end of the online application process.

If you require a visa

If you require a visa to sit an exam, it is your responsibility to ensure the visa application is made in sufficient time before the examination date. We have no role in granting or refusing visas. A refund will not be given if you are unable to attend the examination as a result of a visa-related problem.

Applying for this exam

This exam is held once a year. The next MFOM OSPE will be held on 7 & 8 June 2023. The applications will open on 15 March 2023 at 10am Irish time and close on 12 April 2023 at 5pm Irish time.
