About MFOM Written

The MFOM written exam consists of one paper containing 100 multiple choice questions (3 hours).

If you have not already passed the LFOM you must apply to sit the LFOM Written exam.

New for 2021

Please note that the order of the Portfolio and Written components has been reversed, starting in 2021. Candidates must now pass the MFOM Written exam before they are eligible to sit the MFOM Portfolio.

Multiple choice question paper

This paper tests your knowledge of occupational medicine and will cover topics listed in the exam syllabus.

As well as clinical aspects of occupational medicine, the paper will also include questions on clinical medicine and disease management.

The multiple choice questions are usually 'best of five' style.

Entry requirements

You must:

  • Hold a medical qualification from a medical school recognised by the World Health Organisation
  • Be registered to practice medicine by the relevant body in your home country. You will need to provide evidence of this during the application process
  • Have completed Basic Specialist Training or two year's full-time equivalent experience
  •  have passed the LFOM Written - If you have not already passed the LFOM Written, you must also apply for the LFOM Written

What to include with your application

There is an online application process for this exam. When you apply you will need to upload

  • a scanned attested copy of your primary medical degree
  • a copy of your CV (must be submitted as a single separate document)
  • any other relevant documents

If you have already applied for an MFOM exam, you do not need to resubmit these documents.

Your medical degree can be attested by:

  • An Garda Siochana (Irish police force)
  • The issuing University or Medical School
  • A solicitor/ notary public/ lawyer
  • A Commissioner for oaths
  • An Irish or British Consulate
  • Your Embassy or High Commissioner

Official translations will only be accepted if they have been prepared and/or authenticated by:

  • The issuing University or Medical School
  • An Irish or British Consulate
  • Your Embassy or High Commissioner

Application fee

 The method of payment is credit or debit card, taken at the end of the online application process.

Don't forget, if you're in Ireland you can claim a refund under the HSE Clinical Course and Examination Refund Scheme.

Applying for this exam

This exam is held once a year.
