Prof Mary Horgan is the first female President in the 360 year history of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. She is in her second term as President of the College. She is a Consultant in Infectious Diseases and practices on the frontline in University College Cork in the South of Ireland. She is former Dean of the School of Medicine in UCC. She currently serves on our National Immunisation Advisory Committee and our National Public Health Emergency Team – which advises the Irish Government on public health issues during this pandemic. She is also Chair of the National Research Ethics Committee. She also trained in the US where she worked in St Louis from 1990-1997.
Prof Mary Higgins is an elected Fellow and Censor on the RCPI Council and was appointed Vice President in October 2021. Originally from Kildare, Mary graduated from University College Dublin and completed her training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Ireland, with membership and then fellowships of the RCPI and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK). Following an MSc in University of Oxford she gained further research experience by a MD (Diabetes) from UCD. She gained experience in Maternal Fetal Medicine in Toronto, Canada and returned to Ireland to her current post, as Associate Professor in University College Dublin and a consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist in the National Maternity Hospital. As a Principal Investigator in UCD Perinatal Research Centre she has more than 100 publications and supervises PhD, MD, MSc and undergraduate students. Mary was a ministerial appointee to the Slaintecare Medical Advisory Council (2018-2021). She is currently completing a Masters in Medical Education and has a Diploma in Entrepreneurial Education. She is an Associate Fellow AMEE (Association for Medical Education in Europe) and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators. Within RCPI, she is Chair of the Examination Board for the MRCPI (O&G) and the Board of the Postgraduate Certificate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Professor Michael Keane is Registrar of the College, and an elected Fellow on RCPI Council. Prof Keane is Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics at UCD and Consultant Respiratory Physician at St Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH). He graduated from UCD in 1989 and following initial clinical training in Dublin, moved to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine in 1995. He subsequently took up a faculty position at University of Michigan in 1998 and in 2000 moved to University of California, Los Angeles where he was Professor of Medicine and Programme Director for the UCLA Interstitial Lung Disease Center. Professor Keane returned to UCD and St Vincent's University Hospital in 2007 where he is an SFI Principal Investigator at the UCD Conway Institute and SVUH Lead Clinical Coordinator for Lung Cancer services. He is Lead Clinical Director, Chairman of the Medicine Division, Chair of the SVUH Medical Executive and a member of the hospital Board of Directors. He is Clinical Director of the UCD Clinical Research Centre and a member of the Molecular Medicine Ireland Board of Directors. His research interests centre on molecular investigation into, and treatment of, inflammatory lung diseases; particularly pulmonary fibrosis.
Dr Maeve Skelly is Treasurer of RCPI. She graduated from UCD and trained in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General Medicine in St Vincent's Hospital Dublin while completing a PhD through the Dept of Pharmacology in UCD. Dr Skelly completed her training in Queen's Medical Centre Nottingham and University of Nottingham. After a couple of years as a Consultant in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals she returned to Ireland to take up her current position as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in University Hospital Limerick. Dr Skelly has been Treasurer of Irish Society of Gastroenterology, Clinical Lead for Bowel Screen in the Mid West and BST Programme Director of UL Hospital. Dr Skelly has served three terms on Council of RCPI and one term as Censor.
Dr Sinead Murphy is the Chair of the Academic Board and Director of Education and Academic Programmes at Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. A Consultant Paediatrician at CHI, Temple Street AND Head of Subject of Paediatrics at UCD School of Medicine, Dr Murphy has consistently combined her role as a clinician educator with clinical positions at every level, allowing for seamless integration of these two interconnected roles. Dr Murphy studied undergraduate medicine in Trinity College Dublin. .She trained in paediatrics in Dublin and then in the UK at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and at University College London where she completed a clinical fellowship in Paediatric Endocrinology before returning to Ireland in 2001. She has been a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland since 2012. Dr Murphy has a special interest in childhood obesity and has carried out extensive research on this subject. , Dr Sinead Murphy is a member of RCPI’S Clinical Advisory Group on Obesity. Dr Murphy is also Education Lead for CHI, Ireland’s new Paediatric Hospital.
Dr Louise Kyne is Dean of the Faculty of Paediatrics. She commenced her consultant career in Letterkenny University hospital, as a General Paediatrician with a special interest in Community Child Health and took up her current Consultant Paediatrician post in Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Temple Street in 2007. She graduated from University College Galway in 1990 and subsequently completed her initial paediatric training in Ireland. She furthered her clinical training in Nottingham, UK where she obtained an M.Med.Sci (Clin Edu) and completed a clinical and research fellowship (Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect) in The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. She was the Associate Dean of Paediatric membership examinations in RCPI between 2007 and 2013.She is an Honorary Senior lecturer at RCSI Her special interests include child maltreatment, child development /disability and clinical education.
Professor Sam Coulter-Smith is the Chair of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is a consultant in the Rotunda since 2002. During this time, he developed a special interest in the area of infection in pregnancy. He was also instrumental in expanding the diabetes service at the hospital and has a big interest in complications of early pregnancy. He has an interest in gynaecology, particularly familial ovarian cancer and pelvic floor surgery. Prof. Coulter-Smith was Master of the Rotunda Hospital from January 2009 to December 2015. During his Mastership, he devoted much of his time to ensuring quality and safety standards were maintained at the Rotunda, and raised the profile of maternity services onto the national stage. Professor Coulter-Smith is a clinical professor attached to the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and has a keen interest in training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is a strong advocate for the improvement of maternity services in Ireland. He is also a member of the Women’s Health Council.
Professor Mary Keogan is the Dean of the Faculty of Pathology. Prof. Keogan is the former Clinical Lead for the National Clinical Programme in Pathology, and is currently a Consultant Clinical Immunologist in Beaumont Hospital Dublin. Prof. Keogan studied medicine at University College Dublin, undertook postgraduate medical training in medicine in Dublin, specialist training in Immunology in Cambridge in the UK, and as a Consultant Immunologist in Papworth NHS Trust, developed a specialised clinical immunology service. Since returning to Dublin, Prof. Keogan has developed a busy clinical and laboratory immunology service in Beaumont Hospital and is medical director of the National Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Service for Solid Organ Transplantation. Research interests include optimisation of transplantation outcomes and improving clinical effectiveness in the use of diagnostic tests.
Professor Cecily Kelleher is Chair of Public Health Medicine & Epidemiology at University College Dublin (UCD). She has been the Principal of the College of Health and Agricultural Sciences in UCD since 2015. She previously served as Dean and head of the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science. Professor Kelleher is a member of the Royal Irish Academy. She served as Chair for the report to the Minister for Health in the Republic of Ireland of the COVID-19 Nursing Homes Expert Panel on Examination of Measures to 2021. Her main areas of research are on Lifecourse epidemiology and cardiovascular disease, childhood obesity, Traveller health, and the public health impacts of tobacco smoke.
Professor Anthony O'Regan is Dean of the Institute of Medicine. A Consultant in Respiratory and Internal Medicine in University Hospital Galway, Professor O’Regan is the Chief Academic Officer for Saolta University Healthcare Group and an Honorary Professor of Medicine at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Professor O’Regan graduated from University College Dublin in 1990. He completed postgraduate training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Boston University School of Medicine. In addition to holding Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Professor O’Regan is American board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Allergy and Immunology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He was conferred with an MD doctorate from UCD in 2003 and has received several distinguished teaching awards in both Ireland and the USA. He is a past-President of the Irish Thoracic Society.
Dr Robert Ryan is the Dean of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine. He is a Specialist Occupational Physician and Managing Partner of Medmark Occupational Healthcare. After graduation from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1989 he completed BST in in General Internal Medicine in Dublin and then BST in General Practice in Sheffield, UK. On his return to Ireland in 1995 he joined Medmark and has specialized in Occupational Medicine since then. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine. To support him in his role as Managing Partner he completed a Masters in Management through the IMI & UCC in 2013. Dr Ryan manages a portfolio of clients in a number of sectors, is lead physician to the Dept of Education in the delivery of its occupational health programme, and leads a nationwide team of occupational physicians and nurses.
Mr Kieran Crowley is the Senior Independent Director on the RCPI Executive Board. Mr Crowley is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland & a Chartered Director. Mr Crowley has been a consultant to public, private and semi-state organisations for over 30 years – both in Ireland and internationally. Consulting services have evolved over time from financial control, planning and monitoring, management information system projects, custom IT projects, organisation structuring and executive development, to improving board conduct and governance advice. Positions Mr Crowley has held include: Vice-Chairman (NED) of the Commissioner of Irish Lights & Chair of Audit Committee, 2013 – date; Non-Executive Director (NED) of the Irish Cancer Society 2014 – date; Non-Executive Director (NED) of Oxygen Care Ltd, supplier of anaesthesia systems etc, 2017 – date; Former Non-Executive Director (NED) of AIB Group and its major subsidiaries in Poland, UK and Northern Ireland; 2004-2014; Former three-term Chairman of the SFA 1998-2003. Member of IBEC National Council 1998-2005.
Dr Terry McWade is CEO of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Dr McWade, who qualified as a medical doctor at Trinity College Dublin, has led a number of technology and medical education innovations including the world’s first online surgical training programme - a collaborative venture between the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Harvard Medical School and Intuition. He has previously worked in the pharmaceutical industry at Servier Laboratories, as Managing Director of Servier Denmark, and at its Paris headquarters. He led the healthcare consulting practice of the Boston Consulting Group in London and is former CEO of Exceptis Technologies, where he led the sale of this business to Trintech Group in 2000. Prior to establishing Valitacell, Terry was Deputy CEO of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (2004-2013). He is the former Chairman of the European Vaccine Initiative, Deputy Chairman of the Dublin Dental Hospital and serves on a number of committees of the Irish Medical Council. He holds an MBA from INSEAD and has a MSc in Healthcare Ethics and Law.
Sheila Gallagher is the Chief Financial Officer of RCPI. She joined the College in January 2019 and is responsible for the strategic financial management and growth of RCPI. Sheila graduated from DCU with a degree in business in 1998 and trained as a Chartered Accountant with British Land Investments. She spent a number of years as Finance Director in RTE before taking up the position as CFO in RCPI.
