Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI) is our most prestigious category of membership. Achieving FRCPI is an internationally recognised benchmark of professional excellence. 

As a Fellow, you join the most senior echelons of the College, eligible to vote and contribute to our strategic direction. Having FRCPI after your name lets others know you are a highly experienced doctor who has mastered their specialty and made substantial contributions to medicine.

We are actively seeking to grow our Fellowship community and welcome applications from doctors who would like to become Fellows of the College.

You can apply to become a Fellow today if you meet the following criteria:

  • You've had MRCPI for 4+ years
  • You've been in a Consultant post for 1+ year(s)
  • You have found two Fellows (FRCPI) to support your application

 

Not a Member of RCPI? 

We will consider your application if you have Membership or Fellowship of one of the following colleges:

  • Academy of Medicine Malaysia
  • Academy of Medicine Singapore
  • American College of Physicians
  • College of Medicine South Africa
  • Hong Kong Academy of Medicine/Hong Kong College of Physicians
  • Royal College of Physicians London
  • Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow
  • Royal Australasian College of Physicians
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canada

You can also apply for Fellowship of RCPI if you are a Fellow of one of our Faculties or Institute:

  • Faculty of Occupational Medicine
  • Faculty of Pathology
  • Faculty of Paediatrics
  • Faculty of Public Health Medicine
  • Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

We have a large, vibrant international community of Fellows - over 50% of our Fellows are not based in Ireland. The top 10 countries where our Fellows are based are:

Fellows who are not based in Ireland are entitled to access all of the rewards listed above and they also use the FRCPI postnominal.

Our international Fellows often act as ambassadors for RCPI in their region, helping us to arrange educational and social events in their part of the world. As an international Fellow you can help grow the College's global presence and reputation.

How the FRCPI application process works

1. Check you meet the criteria for Fellowship

2. Complete the PDF application form, available below

  • You will be asked to describe the value of Fellowship to you and your contribution (or potential contribution) to medicine and/or RCPI
  • You will be asked for a full list of your academic qualifications and a full list of substantive posts that you’ve held

3. We will check your application is eligible to go forward

4. We will contact the Fellows ("Nominators") named on your form to confirm they support your application

5. Your application will go to our Credentials Committee for initial approval

6. Your application will go to RCPI Council for final approval

7. You will be informed if your application has been successful and if so, you will be invited to attend our next Fellowship admission ceremony in No.6 Kildare Street

Fellowship Admission Ceremonies

Fellowship admission ceremonies are currently held twice a year in June and October in our historic home at No.6 Kildare Street.

You are not officially a Fellow until you attend your admission ceremony and make a declaration in the presence of the President of the College.
