RCPI CEO to retire at end of 2022

Dr Terry McWade, CEO of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, is to retire at the end of 2022. Dr McWade joined RCPI in 2019 and has developed and implemented a new business strategy which, together with a focus on innovation and operational excellence, has consolidated the College’s financial position.

Dr Terry McWade

RCPI President, Prof Mary Horgan, paid tribute to Dr McWade’s contribution. “It has been a challenging few years with lots of uncertainty and Terry provided experience and leadership that enabled RCPI to continue to deliver on its core business of providing medical training and exams in the midst of a pandemic. He also introduced a new business strategy that has positioned the College for future growth. Terry has been an invaluable support to me as President and to the Executive Board and RCPI Council. His focus on leading and developing our committed staff in recent years has allowed the College to enhance its engagement with its learners, members and fellows. We will miss him and I want to warmly wish Terry and his family every happiness in the future.

“I am also pleased to announce that Sheila Gallagher, Deputy CEO and Chief Financial Officer will take up the position of Interim CEO. Sheila joined RCPI in 2019 from her role as Finance Director in RTE. She has over 20 years experience in financial management, strategy, organisational change and corporate governance. Sheila is a member of the RCPI Executive Board and Council and has worked closely with myself and Terry and all of the officers to enhance the College’s financial strength and to provide a platform for growth. Prof Trevor Duffy, RCPI Director of Healthcare Leadership will also increase his time commitment to the college going forward.”

Dr McWade said: “I have loved working in my role as CEO of RCPI and have been privileged to work with colleagues to support our Members and Fellows during the particularly difficult period of the COVID pandemic. It has been a pleasure to work with the President, Executive Board and Council, Senior Management Team and all of our trainees, Members and Fellows, and the staff at RCPI. I wish the College and all of the staff continued success for the future.”
